About Age UK Sheffield

Age UK Sheffield is an independent, local charity, working with people aged over-50 in Sheffield, who desperately need our support:
-
One in three people in Sheffield are aged 50+ (circa 180,000); approximately 84,000 people are aged over 65; there are 4,300 people aged 90+
-
1 in 7 older people cite the television as their main source of company
-
1 in 5 older people have not seen anyone for a month or more
-
16,000 people are identified as being at risk of social isolation in Sheffield. People who are socially isolated are more likely to develop heart conditions and dementia. The physical effect equates to smoking 15 cigarettes per day
-
20% of households in Sheffield live in poverty
-
Estimates of 40%-60% of eligible older people not claiming Attendance Allowance (last year we helped older people claim over £1m in benefits, and 95% of customers when surveyed said they would not have claimed without our help)

Age UK Sheffield works to support over-50s in Sheffield to lead independent and fulfilled later lives. In 2015/16, we had over 15,000 contacts with more than 8,000 people in Sheffield who needed our support.
Our support workers provide a lifeline to older people in the city who are at risk of losing their home; to others with life-limiting illnesses; and many more who are lonely and isolated.
Our Wellbeing Centre in Norfolk Park provides a stimulating and interactive environment for people with memory loss and dementia, and respite for their families. The team there uses a programme of music, animals, arts and craft, and leisure activities, as therapy.
Our Information and Advice Centre helps thousands of older people access benefits they weren’t previously claiming, adding £1.5m to spending power in the city in 2014/15.
Age UK Sheffield is a small charity but we have a very large reach - everyone in the city hopes to live beyond the age of 50, and will have a friend or family member aged over 50. Everyone in Sheffield may need our services at some point in their life.
